About Charleroi CRL Airport

Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) Airport, known also as Charleroi Airport is placed close to the Science Parks of Wallonia (Belgium for the Frenchmen), Aéropole, in south of Belgian capital, Brussels in the region named Charleroi.
The airport began to be frequented by the passengers from ’90s when an air company, Ryanair, opened a base of operations in that region. Today its capacity is over 5 million passengers per year (thanks to a new terminal opened in 2008, the number of passengers grew up).

Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) Airport is used especially for transcontinental, international and domestic flights and the airlines which are flying to Charleroi Airport are Ryanair, Wizz Air, Jetairfly and Jet4you.

The history of this airport tells us that in the airport’s area was used for flights for the first time in 1919 as a flying school and in 1920 for aeronautical maintenance activities.

After World War II, the location became a public aerodrome, but during this period aeronautical constructions change the appearance of aerodrome. For a short period of time, the airport was used only of pleasure and private flights around Algeria and Mediterranean Sea. Then, a blooming period comes with air companies which open new routes and establish new links with other destinations.

Today, many tourists choose Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) Airport for their holiday destinations and because of its cheap flights to locations not easily reached by high-speed trains from Brussels.
